I think this book has not only become so popular because of the intriguing name. We all ask ourselves quite essential questions, some of us more often than others. Where do we come frome, where are we going.. Where AM I going? What do I want to do with the rest of my life? Especially at year end these questions resurface. Nature invites us to stay indoors. And the holidays bring us together with family and friends, some of them we haven’t seen for quite some time. When we hear the stories of other people we automatically think about ourselves, and what we achieved – or did not. For some of us the holiday season is full of joy, for some it is a quite depressing period. Some of us will celebrate amongst beloved, some of us alone. All of us have the choice to decide whether we look at ourselves and where we stand in our lives as the famous glass being half full or half empty. I would like to invite you to consider this glass as offering space to be filled. With memories and with plans. If you find out the colour of your parachute you can also reflect on what you will do with those talents. Are you using them, are you using the right ones? Is there anything you always wanted to do but did not? What about planning to do so next year? Fill your glass with new experiences, plans, developed talents. Discover yourself and the important role you play in this world. Walk on this earth with open eyes for yourself and your surroundings. I know all this reads a little strange to some of us. 5 to 12?

November. The last month of the year. For some of our plans it is about time to realise them. Others are well achieved. This final stretch to the final post is an intriguing period. Nature gives us ample opportunity to stay indoors and reflect, spend time with beloved, maybe read a book. Business might be a little slower till everybody recognises that all of a sudden 2011 is over. So while this year is indeed getting to its end, treat you to some chill time as well. We will review this year together to get in the best possible shape for 2012. 2011 was a year of quite some challenges and events, and most likely 2012 won’t be that much different. I would like to invite you to use these couple of weeks in November to put yourself a little more on a kind of autopilot, to give your system a little space to breath. The end of the year will come soon enough, and the need to plan and get going with the new year.

Harvest Time

We see these celebrations all around, thanking for a good harvest, enjoying the fruit of a year full of work. We should do the same as employees with another trade than farming. We should thank for everything we got and achieved this year. We put a lot of work into our own development and saw our skills and capabilities grow. And together with it our motivation. We will build on this further, raising to even higher levels of performance next year. But for now let us be the queens and kings of harvest, celebrate and be celebrated. There is this brilliant leadership skill to catch people when they are doing good. We should catch not only others but also ourselves when we do something good. We will work on ensuring that we do more of it, banking on our strengths. And focusing only on those weaknesses which would, if they were strengths, really satisfy us profoundly. All this to come during the coming weeks. But for now: have a party!

If only…

Summer vacation is a little like New Year’s eve, with lots of good resolutions.. And similar to February the fall sees us finding excuses why our plans haven’t been realised yet. If only I could, If only this was different, If only… We find all sorts of explanations why our goals haven’t been addressed yet. Sometimes the explanation is right. But very often there is another message we need to face. Let’s use the evenings which are now getting cooler to reflect on those. Why are we so reluctant in doing that additional qualification? Why did we not manage to write one single job application? Why did we not have that crucial conversation? Life is about choices. And we always chose, even if we don’t. If the actual situation still is more comfortable than the uncertain future situation our willingness to change and take action is rather limited. Or we did the plan because we thought somebody was expecting this from us. Even though it is totally the opposite of what we really want. Instead of fooling us and our environment any longer, why not facing the truth and admitting to it? This will help us so much to plan for our future in the direction we really truly want to go. Let’s use the energy we gained during the summer break to clarify some of the issues we have successfully ignored for so long. If you would like to have a partner while facing the underlying reasons for your actions – or inactions: I am as always at your fullest disposal!

Rejouvenated

Summer break is over, and I am sure we all came back refreshed and full of energy. Maybe we visited some countries which gaves us some inspiration, meeting people with other perspectives. Or we noticed that spending time with other things than work is actually quite rewarding. Or we felt that being together with people we love is something we should do more. What ever the insights are you took back from vacation, now is the time to work them into your life plan. You might be able to adjust your plans for this year, or latest when we start planning your life for 2012. It might be possible to try some things out, so that we know what is feasible next year. Maybe keep one evening per week free for new activities. Be it meeting friends and family, or doing something else which we did not do before. Art class? Support group for a minority group? What ever you decide you would like to try out: just go for it! If you wish to have a sparring partner, I am, as always, at your fullest disposal.

Getting our act together

Soon it is there, the summer break! And so much deserved. We worked committed to achieve our goals, we stayed our course. Or did we? Time to draw some conclusions. I am sure you will see that you achieved quite a tremendous amount already in this year. There might be some projects which lack behind. I wonder why? Time to assess. Maybe we just need to re-adjust our goals, or maybe these projects have lost their importance after all. So we better cross them off our list and focus on those which are still important to us. With this ‘house cleaning’ done we can leave for our vacation with an easy mind. We can spoil ourselves a little, and re-energize to be ready for the rest of the year.

If you want to have a sparring partner to draw conclusions and sort out the ‘must do’ and the ‘not needed anymore’ projects: I am at your fullest disposal!

Out of the Normal

Last month we celebrated, this month is up for something special. We have planned our year and reviewed last year. We are now at full speed to achieve this year’s targets. Summer vacation though is still a while ahead. So what about treating us for little mini breaks? As the job might be a little more in calm waters as in the previous months we can afford thinking of other activities. Most people re-discover outdoor activities now that the sun is shining. I am sure there might be other things you were toying with in your mind. What about using this atmosphere of energy to give them a try? It broadens the horizon and adds useful experiences. In case you were looking for a new challenge: doing something out of the normal will offer you the chance to see what other elements in a job or company might interest you. Either a new challenge will include those elements, or you discover how to have those in a hobby to ensure you refill your batteries properly. Which ever the route is you chose, it will be highly rewarding and fulfilling. If you desire to have a discovery partner for those hidden talents and wishes: I am all yours!

Reward Time!

Do you feel it as well? There is plenty of optimism around us. Nature is bursting, people are smiling again, last year’s rewards are paid.. And we did achieve our first benchmark with the completion of quarter 1. About time for us to spoil ourselves a little. Buy that little something we were always eyeing. Go to that chique new restaurant we were always passing. Book the vacation we always dreamt of. We so much deserve it! And this is only the beginning. 2011 will be a great year, it had a splendid start and will continue that way. We will accomplish our goals and progress as we planned. Indulge in this atmosphere of energy and optimism and use it as the Catalyst for your own success.

First Stage Gate

Yes I know, we just finished our planning. Pugh. But the first quarter is already coming to an end. And the earlier and more often we check actual versus plan, the better we can ensure success. If we see that we are well on track: it’s celebration time! If we see we are not quite where we intended to be: let’s check why. Were the reasons beyond our control? OK, but we still might need to re-adjust our goals. Were they caused by us? This would be an interesting base for some soul searching. Either our goals have changed without us noticing, or we are sabotaging our goals for other reasons. The earlier we find this out the better, to avoid big disappointments at the end of the year. If you want to have a sparring partner while discovering the reasons for a deviation of your plans: I am at your fullest disposal!

I hope you enjoyed jotting down your ideas what you want to achieve this year. After creating the big picture it is now time to enter detailed planning. What would you need to achive by when. And to check whether the goals are realistic. Goals should be reachable by yourself, they should not depend of anybody else. You are the key to your own success. If, in order to obtain a certain position, you lack the one or the other qualification: get it. If, in order to succeed in a certain hobby you need more training: do it. If you then notice that you find all sorts of excuses why NOT to do any of those, we have great indications about your real driving forces. It is all about priorities. When chilling is more important than jogging, that means that the result you hope to obtain when jogging is less a priority to you than to relax and get your mind winded down. Totally understandable! When continuing to work on one project is more important than leaving for 3 days to attend a training course, the additional qualification you hope to obtain is less a priority than finishing that project successfully. Totally understandable! Only that then we need to re-adjust the steps towards your goals. You might like to enhance your private life by being more balanced rather than more trimmed; you might like to enhance your professional career by being known as dependable, reliable, committed employee rather than highly qualified. Different routes to similar outcomes, perfectly fine. If you want to have a sparring partner to check and cross-check your goals: I am at your fullest disposal, as always.
